Week 8: Colors and Lights

This view of sunrise over the ridges in VA.  The first photo had weak colors.  So i made more saturation.  there now is more colors in the second pic.  I liked the second photo since there are good colors.  I liked how red tree stands in the photo.

Last two photos are at the top of Lowell Mountain viewing of Jay Peak.  It was when I left my mother's home to my home.  the first picture was too plain from the sun.  So I made it into less light to show more shadow.  now the second picture, after making it darker, seems clearer with shadows.  It enhanced lot of details.

It was interesting to play with GIMP for color and light.  However i like them as my tool for editing my photos!

Week 6: Landscape photography

On my road trip to Florida, I drove on Blue Ridge Parkway and I started at the Sunrise!  So I drove down the Parkway, somewhere on the top, and saw this view.  I had to stop and take few pictures around this area.   I then noticed there was the Moon setting right above me, so I put my camera on the Tripod and set it on high shutter and set it on the timer.  I wanted to set the timer so I wouldn't touch the camera to cause any vibration because the moon was tiny in the sky so it would be blurry if I hold the camera myself.  However, I noticed that because the sun haven't rise over the mountains, so the shutter caught the shadow and made it exactly as it should be.  When I transferred this picture to my laptop, I enhanced colors by saturation, very little because there are so many colors in the forest that if I enhanced just little more, it would be blurry or look fake.  It took me a while to get this good shot.
This picture was taken in Tampa, Florida; at a Nature park.  I took few pictures in this same area and most of those pictures did not come out well because of the Sun.  I came across this picture and it was little too bright, however I decided to changed it to sephia.  From my surprise, it drastically reduce glares by the Sun.  I liked how sephia made shadows on trees to stand out of the picture.
This picture was taken at another Nature park in Tampa, Florida.  I did something different this time, I looked up.  I took lot of landscape pictures with grounds to show the land.  So I thought that I could find some great landscape (actually more of "Skyscape") up above the ground.  so I found this part of this forest and find it neat that trees seem to form a hold right in the middle.
I saw this tree, small one just right below the giant ancient tree.  I liked how the big tree made everything dark with the shadow, however kept the sun shining on the young tree.  It seems that The old tree is caring of this young tree in the picture.  It was taken in Tampa, Florida also.
We were leaving the nature park, and luckily I decided to take a quick look at my side to appericate the beauty then saw this view.  The ground was so flat and freshly green grass were so healtly.  So I kneel on the ground and shot this picture with my camera because I wanted to get the ground take over more than half in the photograph.  I used the Black and White button on my camera to shoot this picture.  I did not edit this picture, because the Sun was shining right above so made the shadow great for this photograph.
It was taken in St. Peterburgs, Florida, at a beach.  I liked the view so I took lot of pictures on this beach.  It was great because there were no people walking around on the beach so it was perfect.  I happened to snap this picture when the bird flew by.  Dark Clouds in the background was from the Tropical Storm by Mexico so it helped the contrast in the sky with the color from Sun.
This was taken at a Wildness trail and swamp, outside of Clearwater, Florida.  We were walking on the path and noticed that the water was so calm that can see the reflection clearly that I could use for my mirror!  so I tried to get an awesome picture for the Landscape project, and I got this one.  I took this because I liked how the Palm tree is stranded in the water.  This Palm tree is also right on the middle of two different reflections; Sky and forests on the water.
It was taken somewhere in Blue Ridge Parkway, and I was driving 10 mph to enjoy the view in the morning. I then saw this bridge with the view in the background so then I had to take a picture right there.  I love this because it is telling me to welcome to the "next ride" of the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Actually right after this bridge, it was like a roller coaster! Literally, it was so steep for a while!
Tampa, Florida.  I took this picture because i liked how trees were displayed on the landscape.  The pattern of tall thin trees made great shadows.  I also loved how the Sun shine through those green leaves to make them glow.

Week 5: Elements of Photographic Composition & Aesthetics

There are some information about compositions and aesthetics online. So I went through several different
articles, written by writers, students, artists, photographers, teachers, students and many
other people and I learned good lessons  At first, I decided to look this word, aesthetics,
up in dictionaries. So I went to the website: www.dictionary.com; and there are 8 results in
that website. I decided to pick one that I felt the best is related to photography field: "the study of the mind and emotions in relation to the sense of beauty (dictionary.com)"  It makes sense for photography because it does have lot to do with the mind and its senses. If I see something that made some impacts on my emotions, such as something grabbed my eyes and take a look at it. It is the same concept for a photograph; to find a subject that will inspire me the most. But it was interesting to read articles seeing what people believed the meaning of aesthetics (in medicine, art, science and photography field).
I also started to look around for compositions so I decided to research a little on Ansel Adams as I really loved his works. I came across this blog, "Tao of Photography" and this author wrote great amounts of information on compositions and of course some of Adams. I then saw one of Ansel Adams (in this blog) quotations and it indeed make me realize that it is TRUE! His quotation is "You don't take a photograph, you make it." Photography is more of an person's view and other people may not see the same way as this person see.
For example, I walked with a friend at some river and we stopped on a small wooden bridge to look at water. I started to see a rock that make of a shape of an old man's face. Water would flow over this rock, but cause the "whiteness" on the socket of this rock, that made "eyes", so on. I caught my friend's attention and told her that this rock looks like an old man. However she couldn't see it at all, so I decided to take a picture of this rock in the water then went to my work's dark room (yes old times) to develop these films. I printed this very same picture and showed this to my friend. She then could see the image of old man since I MADE it as my own eyes. I am glad I saw this blog because it truly refreshed my mind and if I want people to see what I have seen, the I have to go make it to be! I also wanted to add one thing; I learned from this blog, there is a term for this "story" I just told you about: Previsualization. It seems that Ansel Adams introduced this term to Photography world. He defined it as that it is more like a "labeling the importance of imaging." It is just like the eyes of YOUR mind. So its a good example for this rock shaped of "old man's face"

Week 4 - Colors

I picked this for color because it showed the contrast between black and orange.  Also, noticed that black stick (woods) blocked the orange fire.  That helped the outline of this wood stick...

I took many different photographs for colors and different schemes; it was an interesting experience! Out of many pictures, I narrowed to two pictures that I felt the best. As you see pictures in the above, I took two pots of four different plants. Before I explain about these pictures, the true color (in the natural daylight): the sheet is black; lighter colored pot on left is "off-white" when other is darker pine green; and there are only two different shades of greens on these tropical plants. I decided to put two different blubs in the lamp: green and blue (light blue). Plants show off completely different vibes on each color. In the left picture, it is using the green blub. Plants showed more green than it should be, however did not change colors on many subjects as much as I thought it would. Meanwhile, under blue light, it showed colored as you could see from the black light effect. It is strange to see that since it is blue! I personally liked the blue one because because it showed variety of shades on both pots of plants. It was fun to try all colors (blue (light and dark), green, purple, red, and natural daytime. -Brennan
